Jamestown, NY – Ellicottville artist Karen Fitzpatrick’s stained glass window “Breakout” is among the selections for Women Create, the first juried exhibit of women’s art at the new 3rd On 3rd Gallery in downtown Jamestown, New York.

With the February 11-March 31 show created to feature the work of local and regional women, the preponderance of artists come from throughout western New York. Fitzpatrick is the only Ellicottville artist to be included.

Women Create will display a wide range of art and fine crafts in a variety of media.

A self-taught artist, Fitzpatrick’s interest began with an introduction to stained glass class at Discover Ellicottville in 2003. After a subsequent class in 2006, with trial and error and much experimentation, she completed her first stained glass window for her music room in 2007.

Since then, Fitzpatrick has participated in a number of arts show, primarily in Cattaraugus County where she is a member of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.

In her application for the show, Fitzpatrick noted, “My background does not include a formal education in art……rather, music. Several of my designs are an interpretation of a song or lyric. After cutting and assembling an actual patterned panel, a new composition often emerges from improvisation with the remaining glass.”

She concluded, “My observation: there is no fixed consensus about the nature and essence of art. The concepts of art are defined and redefined by the art world….To all of you who create with heart and dedication! There’s nothing like it! It really can feed your soul.”

Women Create’s opening reception will be 6-8 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at Jamestown’s 3rd On 3rd Gallery, 116 East Third Street, adjacent to the Reg Lenna Civic Center. Presented in cooperation with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County, Women Create will be the gallery’s first major juried show and the second major group/multi-artists show since it opened last year.
