We sent out this news release today; watch for it in your local media.

Openings for Flag Book Workshops

Prototype Flag Book

Jamestown, NY – Creative Arts of Women – Western New York (CAW WNY) is filling downtown Jamestown with wonderful art opportunities to brighten up the remaining weeks of winter.

With funding provided in part by a Ray and Wyn Ritchie Evans Foundation “Artists in the Community Grant”administered by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, three workshops will result in the creation of a Photo Flag Book Installation Project.

The theme of the installation will be images of women making or selling their artwork.

Creators of the program are artist Debra Eck and photographer Jennifer Schlick.

“Folks have been asking us just what a flag book installation is,” said Schlick.

She explained that a flag book is made by creating an accordion-folded binding, then attaching “flags” to each of the folds. The result is a three-dimensional book, almost like a pop-up book. The installation will consist of 16 such books, each containing 12 images of women doing something creative.

“We welcome your participation in three ways,” Schlick continued. “You can invite me to come and photograph you being creative – making art, rehearsing a performance, cooking a meal…whatever you do that is your creative outlet. Or you can email photographs to use in the installation or attend a workshop to help make the books.”

To participate in any of these ways, reply at the “The Installations Workshops” page at http://womencreate.wordpress.com/.

The first workshop, on Paper Preparation, is on Saturday, February 25, 2012, 10 am-noon in the Art Room at theInfinity Visual and Performing Arts Center, 115 East Third Street in downtown Jamestown. This messy workshop is appropriate for all ages; children must be accompanied by adults. The papers created will become part of the installation, and participants will have time to make a small pamphlet journal to take home. There is no fee, but pre-registration is required. Maximum enrollment is 12.

On Saturday, March 3, 2012, 10 am-1 pm, the Flag Book Workshop will be held in Infinity’s Café. Because precision folding is required for the construction of the flag books, this workshop is recommended for students age 13 and up. The books created will become part of the installation. Participants will also make small flag books to take home. Again, with a maximum enrollment of 12, there is no fee, but pre-registration is required.

The Flag Book Completion will be 2-4 pm on Sunday, March 25 at the 3rd on 3rd Gallery at 116 East Third Street beside the Reg Lenna Civic Center in downtown Jamestown. All are welcome to stop by and help finish the flag books before they are hung. Pre-registration is not necessary.

Women Create, a juried show of the work of 41 artists, is currently on exhibit at the 3rd on 3rd Gallery. Presented in cooperation with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County, the exhibit’s regular hours are 10 am-4 pm, Monday-Friday until the closing reception on Saturday, March 31. It can be viewed by appointment by contacting Len Barry at (716) 664-2465, ext. 227.

Artists Salons related to the exhibit will be held on Wednesdays, February 22, March 7 and March 21.

Events are also planned from morning to evening on SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day, Saturday, March 31.

For details on all these programs, visit http://womencreate.wordpress.com/.

That said, we understand if you feel safer staying home. The exhibit will be up through March 31 and there will be plenty of other activities and opportunities to see it. So, use your best judgement and be safe! On the other hand, if you have snow tires, we’ll see you there!

If it’s any consolation, the weather service lists the advisory only through 5pm…
Featuring the works of 41 regional women artists, the exhibit will include a wide range of art and fine crafts in a variety of media. One of the artworks on display from February 11 through March 31 will be this photograph, “Untitled I,” by Jennifer Janowski of Lakewood, New York.

From 6-8 pm, they and many of the 41 exhibiting artists will welcome visitors to the 3rd On 3rd Gallery in downtown Jamestown, New York. The Gallery, at 116 East Third Street, adjacent to the Reg Lenna Civic Center, will display a wide range of art and fine crafts in a variety of media.

The artists, ranging from a high school student through professional working artists, look forward to sharing refreshments with visitors and answering questions about their creations.

Women Create is presented in cooperation with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County. Regular hours will be 10 am-4 pm, Monday-Friday until the closing reception on Saturday, March 31. It can be viewed by appointment by contacting Len Barry at (716) 664-2465, ext. 227.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted and shared between the Arts Council for Chautauqua County and Infinity Visual and Performing Arts for their gracious donation of space.

Other Women Create programs will take place in February and March as well.

With funding provided in part by a Ray and Wyn Ritchie Evans Foundation Artists in the Community Grant administered by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, three workshops will result in the creation of a Photo Flag Book Installation Project.

Cattaraugus County Artists’ Works Selected For Women Create Exhibit

Jamestown, NY – The works of six Cattaraugus County artists are among the selections for Women Create, the first juried exhibit of women’s art at the new 3rd On 3rd Gallery in downtown Jamestown, New York.

Showcasing a wide range of art and fine crafts in a variety of media, Women Create will run from February 11 to March 31.

With the exhibit intended to feature the work of local and regional women, the preponderance of artists comes from throughout western New York. The Cattaraugus County artworks are “On the Fly,” a watercolor by Anne Conroy-Baiter of Allegany; Karen Fitzpatrick of Ellicottville’s stained glass “Breakout”; two watercolors, “Anchored” and “Sweetness and Light,” by Barbara Fox of Little Valley; the photograph “Intersections Two” by Jil St. Ledger-Roty, Franklinville; Olean resident Jennifer Miller’s acrylic “Drake Bufflehead” and “Drifting Dreams” moonstone pendant; and former Olean resident Amy Vena’s mixed media “Dialog II.”

On the Fly – Anne Conroy-Baiter

The Executive Director of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council and a graduate of Tufts University, Anne Conroy-Baiter has worked as a graphic designer, creative director at an advertising agency, and started her own event planning company. She began painting to work out her grief for her mother, also an artist, whom she lost to breast cancer in 2001.

Breakout – Karen Fitzpatrick

A self-taught artist, Karen Fitzpatrick’s interest began with an introduction to stained glass class at Discover Ellicottville in 2003. After a subsequent class in 2006, with trial and error and much experimentation, she completed her first stained glass window for her music room in 2007. Since then, she has participated in a number of arts shows, primarily in Cattaraugus County, where she is a member of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.

Anchored – Barbara Fox

Barbara Fox’s paintings have been featured in museums and galleries throughout the United States, and she leads watercolor workshops around the country. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the International Guild of Realism, among others, and has been published in leading national art magazines. Also working as an illustrator, Fox was hired by the United States Mint for their Artistic Infusion Program; in 2011, four of her coin designs were chosen to be minted.

Drifting Dreams Moonstone Pendant – Jennifer Miller

Jennifer Miller’s work reflects her love of nature and especially birds. She has won awards locally and at art shows in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and San Jose, as well as in North Carolina’s Duck Stamp Competition and first place in the “Swan Lake” category for the CG Society’s “Share One Planet” international wildlife competition. Among her clients of note are Baen Publishing, Windstone Editions, and Nickelodeon/MTV.

Intersections II – Jil St. Ledger-Roty

Jil St. Ledger-Roty has been exhibiting her photographs for six years, both in solo shows and group exhibitions. One of her photographs won second place in the Impact Artists’ Gallery’s Fall National Exhibit in 2009. “Intersections Two” won third prize in the Buffalo gallery’s Fall National Exhibit 2010.

Dialog II – Amy Vena

A graduate student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Amy Vena did her undergraduate work at Jamestown Community College and St. Bonaventure University. She is currently exhibiting her work regionally and working on an extensive research project. She also teaches workshops in Western New York and maintains an active studio in Rochester.

Women Create’s opening reception will be 6-8 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at Jamestown’s 3rd On 3rd Gallery, 116 East Third Street, adjacent to the Reg Lenna Civic Center. Presented in cooperation with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County, Women Create will be the gallery’s first major juried show and the second major group/multi-artists show since it opened last year.
