Jamestown, NY – Deciding that food and art are an irresistible combination, the organizers of this Saturday’s (March 31) Support Women Artists Now (SWAN) Day celebration have added a visual presentation of the availability of food in Jamestown.

The public is invited to bring their lunch to the 1 pm event at the Reg Studio Theatre at 112 East Third Street in downtown Jamestown to learn from Jamestown native Christina Marsh, who describes herself as “not just a foodie but a food maven!”

With a background in food preparation and management, Marsh has a passion for using food that is locally produced. After taking photographs of places where people can get food in this area, she analyzed them, looking particularly at location and access.

Marsh’s interest has led to her participation in the University at Buffalo Food Policy Summit, World on Your Plate Food Conference in Buffalo, and an internship with Chautauqua County Rural Ministries’ Friendly Kitchen. A member of the Food Security Task Force Committee, a project of Chautauqua County Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work, and Play, she is currently interning with the Chautauqua County Health Department, working on the Farm to School project.

Marsh has studied food from the social work, sociology, and anthropological disciplines.

While living on her husband’s family’s farm, Marsh stayed at home to raise four boys. She will graduate in May from the State University of New York at Fredonia with her bachelors in social work and interdisciplinary minors in public health and sociology. In the fall she will pursue her Masters of Social Work from the University at Buffalo.

Another SWAN Day event is the Art Market from 10 am to 3 pm at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts at 115 East Third Street.

Walk-ins are welcome to the SWAN Day hands-on workshops led by accomplished artists and held at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts and the Arts Council for Chautauqua County. Afternoon workshops run from 2-5pm and are Introduction to Japanese Traditional Painting, and Image Transfer. Details are on-line at http://womencreate.wordpress.com/swan-day-2012/workshops/.

The closing reception for the Women Create art exhibit at the 3rd on 3rd Gallery at 116 East Third Street in downtown Jamestown will be 7:30-9 pm on Saturday. The reception will include the unveiling of the Photo Flag Book Installation Project with the theme of images of women making their artwork. Three workshops were held to create this project, with funding provided in part by a Ray and Wyn Ritchie Evans Foundation Artists in the Community Grant administered by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.

Free and open to the public, Women Create is presented in cooperation with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County. Regular hours are 10 am-4 pm, Monday-Friday. For viewing by appointment, contact Len Barry at (716) 664-2465, ext. 227.

The books are done! Well, almost. Turns out the adhesive we picked for attaching the photos to the books isn’t quite sticky enough. Deb and I will have to go back and check and reinforce pictures before the closing reception.

Originally, we had envisioned leaving one wall of the gallery blank – to hang the books on, eventually. We “accidentally” accepted “too much” artwork into the show and had to use that wall for other artists. So we had to get creative on where to hang the books. What to do, what to do?

And the answer is: from the ceiling, of course!

Flag books are hard to describe, and they are also hard to photograph. To appreciate them, you really should drop by the 3rd on 3rd gallery which is open 10am-4pm this week if you want to see. But we hope you will also come to the closing reception on March 31 for the official unveiling with speechifying and everything.

Jamestown, NY – “Our beautiful weather has kept everyone outside, so we’re extending the deadline for registration for workshops on SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day, Saturday, March 31.”

Final Women Create Artists Salon Announced

Jamestown, NY – Artists from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties will be featured during the final Salon in conjunction with the Women Create art exhibit on Wednesday, March 21, 7-9 pm.

Artists from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties will be featured during the final Salon in conjunction with the Women Create art exhibit on Wednesday, March 21. 7-9 pm. The Salon will be held in the 3rd on 3rd Gallery, 116 East Third Street, next to the Reg Lenna Civic Center in downtown Jamestown, where the exhibit runs through March 31. Shown here is the mixed media print “Red Garden 5” by Fredonia artist Jill Johnston, one of the presenters.

The Salon will be held in the 3rd on 3rd Gallery, 116 East Third Street, next to the Reg Lenna Civic Center in downtown Jamestown, where the exhibit runs through March 31.

At the informal gathering, Anne Conroy-Baiter of Allegany, Barbara Fox of Little Valley, Jill Johnston of Fredonia, and Kathleen Tenpas of Panama will give brief talks about their work, interspersed with questions, answers, and conversation. The women’s presentations will focus on their works on display and their personal philosophies and perspectives on art.

Anne Conroy-Baiter is exhibiting “On the Fly,” a watercolor on stretched paper. She plans to start a discussion by sharing how her roles as mother, professional, freelancer, and artist directly affect both the subjects and techniques of her artwork.

Barbara Fox’s watercolor “Sweetness and Light” is an example of her belief that no matter what the subject, a painting should incorporate beauty and technical fluency, be compelling and foster further investigation. A prolific painter, workshop leader, and designer for the U.S. Mint, she looks forward to this informal talk about what motivates and inspires her.

“Red Garden 5,” Jill Johnston’s mixed media print, is part of a five-image series produced after she read Alice Hoffman’s The Red Garden through the haze of pneumonia. She observes that, “My artwork explores the narrative format through animation, drawing, painting, filmmaking, and photography.”

A quilted fabric painting with photo and patchwork, “August’s Bitter Gold” demonstrates that while Kathleen Tenpas dabbles in a variety of media, much of her work ends up on fabric. She says that, “My art is born of my connection to the land, our farm, our woods, my gardens.” Also a poet, for her presentation she’s picked the title “Poetry in Fabric.”

There is no charge for this Salon sponsored by Creative Arts of Women, WNY Chapter, but donations are gratefully accepted.

The Women Create exhibit is presented in cooperation with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County. Regular hours are 10 am-4 pm, Monday-Friday until the closing reception on Saturday, March 31. For viewing by appointment, contact Len Barry at (716) 664-2465, ext. 227.

Events are also planned from morning to evening on SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day, Saturday, March 31.

For details on all these programs, visit http://womencreate.wordpress.com/.
